Amitabh Bachchan says 'Aladin' is a contemporary form of the old fable

Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan promoted his forthcoming fantasy movie 'Aladin' and said it is a contemporary form of the old fable.

The classic tale of 'Aladin and the Magic Lamp' has undergone a modern-day transformation at the Bollywood studios and the film is all set to weave its magic around the moviegoers in the form of this new fantasy film.

One of the most popular fables among the children, which first appeared in 'The Book of One Thousand and One Nights', this story has been adapted by film maker Sujoy Gosh to cater to the Indian audience.

Six years after he first made a mark with the low-budget comedy 'Jhankaar Beats', Sujoy Ghosh is back with a tale of fantasy.

'Aladin' is Ghosh's biggest project, starring veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan as the genie.

"Aladin is the old fable and that's the connection but that's where it ends. There are just I think three things from the old fable which can be associated with the film today, the name Aladin, the lamp and the genie. But it is a contemporary form of Aladin, its modern times. Its a make believe city where there are people just like us. And we speak and talk and behave quite normally," said Bachchan.

Bachchan along with Ritesh Deshmukh, who will be playing Aladin and Jacqueline Fernandes, playing Jasmine in the movie attended a promotional event lhere ast evening.

A surprise item at the event was Deshmukh rubbing the replica of magic lamp kept on the stage and instantly, appeared the genie Bachchan on dais!

Deshmukh expressed his delight of working with Bachchan and other senior actors.

"I am glad that Sujoy Ghosh has reconstructed the character of Aladin. He has made it different. He has written his own story. I hope that the film entertains you," said Deshmukh.

Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandes expressed that since movie is all about making wishes, her wish would be that people watch her magical movie.

"Aladin is a movie that is all about wishes and dreams coming true. So really, my wish tonight would really be for all you to go and see our movie. It's a very beautiful, magical, and wonderful movie. And we had a magical time making it," said Fernandes.

It is the story of an orphan, Aladin, played by actor Riteish Deshmukh who lives in the city of Khwaish and is bullied since childhood by Kasim and his gang.

How his life takes a turn when he meets Jasmine played by Jacqueline, who gives him a magic lamp and what happens after that, forms the basic plot of the film.

The film seems to be a good mix of magic and action and promises to floor the audiences with its new storyline.

The formal curtain raiser of this film is scheduled on October 30. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole's 'intimate' pool sinks before its making

Cheryl Cole will no longer be able to fulfil her dream of constructing an 'intimate' swimming pool for herself and hubby Ashley at their home.

Cheryl's plan for an underground gym and pool was foiled when a planning inspector turned down the idea, calling the development "non essential".

The X Factor judge wanted the space to keep Peeping Toms at bay.

Cheryl and her footie hubby Ashley are now expected to go about their construction plans above the ground on the 12 acres land around their 3.5million pound home.

The couple had made the appeal against an earlier decision that barred them from making the complex, saying that aircraft flying above their home could photograph them during "intimate episodes".

Papers submitted to planners mentioned that the pair had "suffered from a number of incidents, including helicopters with photographers flying over and bogus officials attempting to gain access".

The papers also claimed that the grounds in the village of Shackleford, near Goldalming, Surrey, could be easily seen from a public walkway.

However, Guildford Borough Council rejected the request, as the plan was "inappropriate" for the Green Belt.

"While I note that the occupants clearly suffer a certain level of intrusion into their private lives, I am not satisfied that hese facilities are essential," the Daily Express quoted government planning inspector Philippa Jarvis, as saying. (ANI)

Growing number of Americans are 'spiritual but not religious'

A new University of Chicago survey has revealed that religious institutions may be waning in the U.S, but private religious practices like prayer are actually on the rise.

The study author said that those twin trends suggest a growing number of people are "spiritual but not religious."

The report found that in addition to an increased number of people who pray, a growing number believe in the afterlife. When asked how they view God, the most common responses were the traditional images of father and judge.

Sociologists of religion say the rise in people who are spiritual but religiously uncommitted is prompting churches to repackage their services into more contemporary offerings with fresh, livelier music and less of the usual liturgies.

"Americans' attitudes toward religion are growing more complex. While fewer people identify with a particular religion, belief in God remains high," said study author Tom W. Smith, Director of the General Social Survey at the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

"When asked simply about belief in God, most people include a range of God images, from a personal God to believing in a 'higher power' or a 'spirit or life force,'" he added.

The study found that people who don't believe in a personal God but in a higher power of some kind rose from 5 percent in 1964 to 9 to 10 percent in recent surveys.

The report is based on data from the General Social Survey, the nation's longest, most scientifically reliable source of information on American attitudes and behaviours.

In the U.S., belief in God has ebbed over time from about 99 percent in the 1950s to about 92 percent at present. Certitude about God also has diminished, but the vast majority of Americans still express a strong and close connection to God.

The GSS has asked people for their images of God since 1984, and about half of the people have consistently referred to God as "father," while others used terms like "master" or "judge" to describe their idea of God. The number reporting God as "mother" has stayed at about 3 percent.

Although belief in God remains strong, the survey found that 22 percent of people said they had never attended a religious service, compared with 9 percent in 1972.

The trends toward reduced church attendance began in the mid-1980s, and by the mid-1990s, fewer people reported identifying with a particular religion.

In the most recent survey, 16 percent of people reported "none" when asked about their religious preference, a figure that stood at 5 to 8 percent in surveys taken between 1972 and 1991.

Daily prayer rose from 52 percent in the 1989-90 survey to 59 percent in the most recent survey. Belief in the afterlife also went up modestly, from 69 percent in 1973 to 73 percent in most recent surveys. (ANI)

MJ's estate facing (Dollor) 300m lawsuit

Michael Jackson's estate might lose almost one third of its value, owing to a new lawsuit worth 300million dollars from a furious concert promoter.

Music boss Patrick Alloco of All Good Entertainment is seeking 300m dollars from MJ's estimated 1billion dollars fortune after the King of Pop and his managers bailed out of a concert deal.

Alloco is also pursuing MJ's 'This Is It' show promoters AEG Live and his manager Frank DiLeo, claiming that they breached a 24-million-dollar agreement.

The lawyers for All Good Entertainment have paperwork showing that DiLeo acting for Jacko agreed to a summer 2009 comeback show at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas.

The suit also claims that MJ breached their deal by signing with AEG for his London gigs and committing to money spinning film, DVD and CD deals.

In early June, the firm filed a suit against Michael, AEG Live and Frank Dileo for 40 million dollars over the missed concert, but later amended the claims in a New York federal court, insisting All Good had lost out on the same cash advantages.

Executives at the firm have revealed that Jackson would earn 50m dollars from the one-hour with Pay Per View deals and DVD and CD sales.

His AEG deal over nine months would have banked him a similar fee, reports The News of the World.

The singer demanded that 2million dollars would be given to his mum Katherine before he even took to the stage.

The twenty page document details how Jackson agreed to two concert deals in November.

Jennifer Aniston to return to TV alongside Oprah

The former 'Friends' star will help present a late-night live talk show on the talk show queen's new channel OWN - Oprah Winfrey Network.

And it wasn't Winfrey who lured Aniston into the project, but it was her friendship with Chelsea Handler, 34, an ex stand-up comic who has her own TV talk show, that prompted her to take it up.
